It is possible that Connaught Terrace was a group of houses (often they come
in a 'four pack') along or at right-angles to another road (which latter
might not necessarily be Connaught Road). My own house is today 27 Park
Street, but in 1875 it was 1 (of 1 - 4) Park Villas, Park Street. Around
the turn of the 19/20 Century and up to the First World War, many roads were
completely renumbered, as urbanisation filled gaps and through the existing
numbering system into such disarray that Royal Mail had great difficulty in
effecting deliveries. Many of these separately-named groups of houses were
then absorbed into the new number run and their previous identity vanished -
although more than a few continued to proclaim it in the form of engraved
stones in the house fronts, put there when they were built. Some of these
still survive, as indeed do some of those 'four packs' with their separate
'street name' and house numbers - there's one only three streets from me
now.
