I have just been talking to my dad, and he also remembers the Hilliard
family living at Ropers Hall in Lodge Road, Writtle in the early 1940s. Also
had another think about the road you mentioned - none of the roads into
Writtle precisely match the description. Either the description is slightly
inaccurate or the picture is misleading. Do you know what direction they
drove from? Or did they notice anything as they came into the village? If we
could see the picture or had more details? The three scimitars are the three
seaxes - the emblem of Essex.
