Hi Margaret ~
[A] St. Boltolph Parish Church, Colchester had a strong association with the
military garrison at Colchester ~ and it is well-known that many
Essex/Colchester girls married soldiers stationed at Colchester during the
1700/1800's ~ as well as in more recent decades.
[B] On the 1881 Census there is a John and Emma PATTERSON which may be the
ones you are looking for:
Their entry is part of the 'Royal Victoria Hospital' complex at Netley
Hampshire ~ which was a military complex. John PATTERSON is said to be aged
41 years and born in Ireland ~ described as a 'Servant (O)' ~ I don't know
what this means unless it is an abbreviation for 'Officers Servant'.
Perhaps someone else on this List knows that answer!
His wife is Emma PATTERSON aged 36 (therefore b.c. 1845) ~ she says she was
born at Totham, Essex.
They have a son Walter PATTERSON aged 7 months, born at Netley, Hampshire.
[C] There are a couple of interesting JOSLIN entries on the 1881 Census:
There is an Eliza JOSLIN (widow) aged 70 (therefore b.c. 1811) born in
Dedham, Essex ~ now living at East Hill, Colchester.
There is also a James JOSLIN (born 1835 at Dedham) who is a Carpenter, now
living at Ardleigh, Essex. Several of his children were born at Colchester.
I have no proof, but I would strongly suspect that James could be Emma's
older brother, and Eliza could be Daniel's widow.
I hope this helps
