Hi,
This might be of interest for anyone who has ancestors or relatives
buried at the above cemetery.
When I was there this morning, I noticed a sign up saying that since
November 2004, the Council have been carrying out a safety survey of
existing gravestones, and where necessary, they are being made safe.
This has meant that several stone crosses and some headstones are being
laid flat. It seems that from the ones I saw, most are being laid with
the inscriptions uppermost, so they can still be read.
The Council state that they will endeavour to contact owners where
possible, and will carry out remedial work if they receive payment.
Otherwise, they state they cannot guarantee repair work unless
additional funding can be found.
As this work may be on-going, it seems that most of the graves affected
so far are in the oldest part of the cemetery, i.e. closest to the road
and the original entrance lodge.
Regards
David
