Thanks for the suggestions, Jane. This should work OK (as a workaround)
where there is just the odd one or two to do. I'll try it.
I've also been exploring the possibility of taking IGI and VRI data directly
(in GEDCOM format) to explore probable family patterns. Of course,
everything is in separate records and this would be an ideal application for
a decent Merge Individual function for FH. Also, perhaps a Merge Couples
function? In this situation the Diagram Linking functions can be quite
useful e.g. link existing record as child/spouse/parent, then delete the
"duplicate" parent, etc. But I haven't found an easy way (yet) to merge
CHR(istening) and MAR(riage) records from e.g.IGI. Any ideas?
BTW I've tried your GedFix utility for FTW to FH and it works a treat,
although I saw nothing in column 1 at all. But I get all my REPO tags thrown
out (from FH, not GedFix) - (not important but just wondered why).

What I have been doing is editing the GEDCOM file directly.
Find the ID of both persons. Search down the GEDCOM to find the records for
them. Copy all the related records to a new document, search for all links
to the person to be deleted then change the numbers to the person to be
kept. If you have family on both people you need to think carefully which
way to merge them.
Copy any information over to the person to be kept and then delete out the
records for the person to be removed. Then run through GEDCHK to look for
errors. Load into FH and check very carefully.
