I want to include in the boxes on diagrams the occupation of individuals as
recorded in the individuals pane.

There is no way to do this simple thing from drop down menus. It's very easy
to do with say Family Tree Maker.

I've referred to manual pages 64/65 but they don't appear to help much
except to explain how to create new templates. Of course I could copy the
GEDCOM file to a new name and experiment with that, but in what free time I
have I want to use the product for genealogy, not beat the program into
submission with replaceable parameters here, there and everywhere.

It would be quicker, i.e., a matter of minutes, to open the FH GEDCOM file
in FTM and create the diagram from there. Could this be the only way?

I use FH 2.2.4: is there a later version that allows occupations to be
included with peoples names and dates?

Thanks

Ian
