John,
I would like a query which brings up anyone with the same surname.
I had imagined that it would be easy but then came the married name
issue!
In other query languages I have used this would be equal using an 'OR'
type function but I don't understand how to bring up all men named
SMITH and all women whose married name is SMITH. That should give me
a list to check against the death certificate indexes at FRC.
Surely it should be fairly straightforward.
I'll have a play around with the data references you mention.
Thanks and regards,

This might be over-complicating things a little, but your query requirements probably need a little further clarification, before one can start to suggest something that would suit your needs.
Do you only want to see people that are dead, or people that are "likely" to be dead, irrespective of whether you have an event that could indicate that they are dead (i.e. buried, cremation, etc.).
In any eventuality, if you're just looking for some pointers, then the types of data references that might be of interest (dependant on the exact requirements), might be:
INDI.NAME[1]:SURNAME
INDI.SEX
INDI.FAMS[1]>WIFE>NAME[1]:SURNAME
INDI.DEAT[1]
Note that here we immediately start to see some complications, such as individuals with more than one recorded surname (.name[]) as well as multiple spouses (.fams[]). You can simplify by ignoring these complications, but you may then not get all the records that you might be interested in.
All of these things can be dealt with, once you have a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve; at which point sensible suggestions could be made for how you might filter down to the required records, based on the fields selected.
The only other suggestion worth making, at this stage, is the one that has recently already been made; namely that one can learn a lot by studying how other queries work.
