Bob,
Have you considered some of the windows annoyances as the cause of your
problems.
For example in Windows Explorer when renaming files, it is far to easy to
select delete instead of rename a dir or file.
I have lost files this way.
You might like to consider an alternate directory browser/manager.
I can recommend Opus it is used by many professional software developers.
(Easy to use though)
A free version 6 can be obtained from
http://www.fullprograms.co.uk/downloads-cat-37.html
Or you can trial/purchase version 8 from
http://www.gpsoft.com.au/
Also Microsoft's directory search is very slow and often does not find all
files.
Try using Google's desktop search.
This is very efficient at finding any file , email , web site visited etc to
do with anything you have on your PC.
(The indexing, it always undertakes when you start up can be a bit
annoying.)
Get a free copy from the Google web site.
Hope this helps you find your lost files.
Regards,
Frank
