Barbara,
it sounds like you downloaded the upgrade to your desktop instead of
some other folder. So it is the upgrade icon you are selecting not FH
itself. Did you have an FH icon originally on the desktop? If so it
should still be there I think. Otherwise go to the folder with FH in
and copy the program [icon] to your desktop as a shortcut. Once you
are sorted out you should probably delete the upgrade icon from the
desktop to avoid further confusion.
Note that you can also send a shortcut of your gedcom file to the
desktop, and, assuming the Windows program associations are set
correctly (they should be by default) you can double-click this
shortcut icon and FH will open automatically with that gedcom.
