Thank you so much. I hadn't spotted the white diamonds before...and now I have, it makes all the difference!

In the movement control box, make sure the 'box and bar' option is selected.
You should then see some (very tiny) white diamonds in the diagram at the
intersections of vertical and horizontal lines. (If a couple only had one
child, the diamond will be on the vertical line connecting the child to the
parents). You can then place the cursor over any of the horizontal lines
above a set of children and drag the whole line up, down or sideways. This
should help you get both the
spacing and the vertical alignment you want. In the case of an only child
some alignment can still be made by placing the cursor over the white
diamond in the vertical line above the child.
Also in version 3 there are a few more options which may or may not be
useful to you. Click on 'diagrams' then 'Options' and then click on 'More
layout options' which is near the lower right corner of the main tab of the
options box.
