Sorry for the slow response, but I was away for the day and only now
catching up on my e-mails.
I have got around the problem by starting the computer in safe mode and
disabling DMV Service using control panel/administrative tools/services - I
couldn't do this when the computer was running normally because the actions
were 'greyed' out. I also deleted the driver ioloHL.dll which was supposed
to be the direct cause of the problem. Since then I have been able to run
Family Historian without any difficulty and also System Mechanic still
appears to work ok. I am still waiting for a response from Iolo as to just
exactly what DMV Service does.

Would it be possible for John or Simon to give us an idea of what the
solution was? It could be helpful to others who might be experiencing
similar problems.
