Subject: [FHU] Child with known paternal grandparents but unknown father
Date: Thu, 3 May 2012 23:37:40 +0100
I have come across a case of an illegitimate girl whose father was not identified on her birth certificate but, instead of being given her mother's surname she was given his. She was subsequently brought up by her paternal grandparents and they were identified as such in successive censuses. Therefore her father would have been one of their sons, but I don't know which one - they had 5 sons altogether!
Therefore I was wondering what the best way is of recording the girl's ancestry. One way would be to list her as the child of her mother and an unknown man who I would then link to her grandparents as a son. However, that would imply that they had one more son than they really did and that the girl's father was not one of the known sons. Therefore that is not an ideal solution but it is the only one I can think of.
If there is a better way of dealing with such a problem I would like to know it!
