Hi Mike

You're right the file paths are different for the two computers, but FH
appears to be inconsistent in that it can resolve the links fine if you
double-click the GEDCOM file but NOT if you import it.

I've managed a work-around by correcting the file path using
Find-and-Replace in Window's Notepad. But I would like a proper answer to
this as I'd like to be able to easily copy the Project to an external drive
to work off that drive, and copy it back later.

Many thanks for your valuable help.

I hope Jane Taubman can shed some light.

Cheers
James

Hi James, sorry it is not working.

If you have copied the files to the new PC with different Multimedia file
paths, but not remapped them via "Tools > Work with External File Links",
then that might be the problem.
But if the Multimedia file paths are different, then FH V5 would NOT get the
Multimedia file links OK when you open the standalone GEDCOM.
So I am bemused at what file structure and Multimedia file links you have on
the new PC.

Just to clarify, your GEDCOM and Multimedia on the new PC are located at:
C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\GedcomFile.ged
C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\Photos\PhotoFile.jpg(or other folders within
C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\)
i.e. the Multimedia files are within the same folder as the GEDCOM file.

If you double-click on C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\GedcomFile.ged to open the
standalone GEDCOM the Multimedia file links are OK.
FH V5 "Tools > Work with External File Links" shows the Multimedia files at
C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\Photos... etc.

You use "File > Project Window > New Project" and select "Import a GEDCOM
file" and leave "Copy any linked multimedia files..."
ticked, and leave "Make default" ticked.
Don't click any GEDCOM file, just open FH V5 and your newly created Project
should open by default with the Multimedia files in the following folder:
\My Documents\Family Historian
Projects\{NewProject}\{NewProject}.fh_data\Media\Photos\ etc.
The GEDCOM will be at:
\My Documents\Family Historian
Projects\{NewProject}\{NewProject}.fh_data\{NewProject}.ged

What does FH V5 "Tools > Work with External File Links" show as the File
Links path? It should start "Project Data Folder - Media"

That doesn't work for me Mike. I get the GEDCOM data without the linked
files. "Tools\Work with External File Links" shows that the links are wrong.
FH may be confused because I've copied the files to the new computer so the
folder structure is different, although 'relatively' the structure is still
the same. But FH DOES get the links if I simply double click the GEDCOM
file!

I'll carry on ploughing through the help files, but this is wearing me down.

Thanks
James

James,

Use "File > Project Window > New Project" and select "Import a GEDCOM file"
and leave "Copy any linked multimedia files..." ticked.

Click Help button for background advice.

Also use "Help > Family Historian Help" and enter "Upgrading" into "Search"
tab for lots more advice.

I recommend joining the FHUG for free at
http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi where there is even more advice on
using Projects, Plugins, etc, etc...

Subject: [FHU] What's the best way to upgrade from FH2 to a FH5 project on a
new computer?

Hi

I have a Family Historian version 2 GEDCOM with many links to multimedia
files in the following structure:

C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\GedcomFile.GED

Linked multimedia files are in subfolders eg.
C:\JamesDocs\Genealogy\Photos\PhotoFile.jpg

I have a new computer with FH version 5.

I'd like to embrace all the benefits of Projects with all the files in
C:\Users\James\Documents\Family Historian Projects

How do I do that please?

I can't get "Import a GEDCOM file" to work with links retained, nor "Import
from other family tree file".

FH5 won't work on my old PC so I can't create the project there.

Simply double-clicking on my FH2 Gedcom does open in FH5 with links working,
but I don't know how to save what's on the screen to end up with a full FH
Project and all my files and photos in the Family Historian Projects folder.

Thanks a lot

James
