Subject: [FAMILY-NEWSLETTERS] Welcome!
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 02:46:09 EDT
Hi everyone- Wow! What a great start to our new list. In our first day
since the list was announced in the RootsWeb Review we have 35 subscribers
total! There are 21 subscribers to FAMILY-NEWSLETTERS-L and 14 subscribers
to FAMILY-NEWSLETTERS-D.
So I think it is time for some introductions and groundwork about the topics
we want to see covered on this list. I am Joan Young and I am the
administrator for this list. I don't consider myself to be any sort of
expert on Family Newsletters although I have put out a surname newsletter for
several years. I feel that this is not a list for "experts" anyway, but
rather a list for the open discussion among people who either are involved
with a family or surname newsletter, or who are contemplating starting one.
We can cover whatever topics are of interest to you--such as building your
subscribership, deciding on a format and software to create a "look" for your
newsletter, printing, gathering and writing articles, motivating others to
contribute articles, details in preparing a newsletter for mailing, online
publishing of an electronic newsletter (email) for a family or surname,
problems you might encounter and how best to deal with them....the list goes
on and on....and this list can be what you want it to be.
As I said above I have put out a surname newsletter that is sent out by
regular mail for over three years. The current subscribership is a little
over 200. I don't claim to have all the answers as I believe each newsletter
takes on a personality of its own and that this is a good thing. There is no
right or wrong..there are many ways to put out a great newsletter that we can
share with each other.
Please feel free to introduce yourselves and tell us what your experience in
this area has been (what you can contribute and share with us), and what you
hope that we can discuss on the list (what others can help you with).
Again--welcome to all of you!
