You probably have a bad database. Do not back up over another database until you
find the last one you did that did not give you an error message when you click
on "find" when you return to the program.
I have had a problem since I decided to solve my 22-35 problem by moving the the
whole setup to C:\FamilyOrigins. Actually, I moved it to Programs\FamilyOrigins
before I decided to keep it closer to the top.
Anyway, I'm having "find" problems. The same kind you mention. If I chose "open
a database", it works find until I leave the program and come back. Then I get
the error message the first time I click on "find".
I knew that some of the databases did it and some not, but I didn't go all the
way through the list to see what did and didn't. I gedcomed out my main file and
imported it back in. Still bad "find" the second time.
I reinstalled the program and the first time I opened my database it worked,
second time, it didn't. (my main database)
Ok - I went through all those multitude of databases that I have - a lot of them
created while trying to figure out the 22-35 business and some I had from other
sources and some were created while trying to combine my data with someone elses
into a merged file - I have only imported one small file into my information and
it caused me no trouble. That file still sits there is is a good file (the small
one) so it isn't because I imported other material. I think there were 32 good
ones (including duplicates I had left in other subdirectories while I was trying
to figure it all out) and 7 bad ones including my main database. 3 of the bad
ones were ones I merely placed in the subdirectory. Just looked at them and
printed out what I needed. Did not use. One was from a CD FTM. 2 that people had
sent me and I just looked at. One was from a CD that I had added some of my
information to. (that was a merge and it took me 3 databases to do and only one
of them is bad). This is not adding up to 7 because I counted one twice I think.
Anyway, my main database is bad and the gedcom I made and imported into a new
database is bad.
I do have good databases from the time before I moved all that around that have
the same name as my main database (older versions). I will have to retrace to
find the last good one. I would be in good shape except that a relative wanted 3
generations from our ancestor and I discovered that I had never entered
information for the grandchildren of 2 of the children. This led to a lot of
entering and fine tuning. I knew I was having trouble with the "find", but I
could still use it.
I do have databases that are current as of this year. I probably backed up my
bad database over some good ones, so I will have to do some detective work.
Just assume you have a bad database and proceed from there. Packing did not
help.
