Unlike FO3, all versions of FO since ver. 5 create ordinary zipfiles
to backup FO databases. These backup files are the same as normal
zipfiles and can also be opened and restored with PKZip or WinZip or
whatever zip utility you're used to using.

Using the record numbers in FO to permanently label FO data in saved
reports is dangerous and asking for trouble down the line, for those
record numbers will change under certain conditions without any
indication to you. For example, when importing a gedcom file into a
new database, the records imported begin at number one and continue
consecutively without regard to the record numbers in the gedcom file.
If you import a gedcom file previously exported from FO into another
existing FO database, the records imported will begin at the next
higher record number in the existing database and continue up
consecutively. And dragging & dropping is the same as gedcom
export/import and will regenerate the record numbers in the same way.
In short, if you ever move your data around you will find some record
numbers changing at various times.
FO provides a reference number fact type which you should use if you
want to keep up with your data that way. If you would like to convert
the record numbers in your database now to unique reference numbers
which will never change, you can find how to do that in the FO List
archives at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS.html
Search there for "unique reference number" for year 2000 and in the
resulting finds, choose file name 118.
