Notes: From a newspaper clipping dated 1935 - newspaper unknown PETTRY RITES SET
ON TODAY Johnstown Road Woman Succumbs to Attack of Pneumonia After Short
Illness: Funeral services for Mrs. Lucinda Pettry, 71 years old, who died at her
home on Johnstown Road at four o'clock yesterday morning following a brief
illness of pneumonia, which climaxed a long period of poor health, will be held
by Dr. Ritchie Ware, pastor of the First Christian church, at the residence this
afternoon at 2:30. Following the service the body will be temporarily placed in
the mausoleum of Sunset Memorial Park, with Calfee Undertakers in charge of
arrangements. Born in Summers County, October 29, 1863, the daughter of Levi
Farley, she was twice married, first about 1879 to Thomas Jackson Quinn,
construction contractor then recently emigrated from Ireland and then, following
Quinn's death about 35 years ago, to A. P. Pettry, also of Summers County, who
survives her. She is survived by the following children: Dr. J. M. Quinn, of
Beckley; F. T. Quinn, of Louisville, Ky; Mrs. W. C. Canterbury, of Johnstown
road, Beckley, and Mrs. L. P. Jackson, of Glen Morgan. Nine grandchildren are
living. Of three sons who are dead, one was Fowler Quinn, who died in 1922, the
father of Ned and Mike Quinn, prominent in athletic circles hereabouts. Another
son was Mike Quinn, who lost his life in 1907 when, as fireman on the Chesapeake
and Ohio engine piloted by Mike Flanagan, passenger train number three crashed
into a landslide beyond Hinton, a wreck famous among followers of railroading in
the southern end of the state. Mrs. Pettry also leaves three sisters, Mrs. E. G.
Farley, of Pipestem, Mrs. J. C. Lilly, of Flat Top, and Mrs. James Garten, of
Pipestem.
Her body will repose but temporarily in the Sunset mausoleum. In deference to
her own wishes, it will finally be interred in the Quinn family cemetery in
Summers County, but the condition of highways thereabouts prevented expedient
burial there at this time. Pallbearers for the services were announced as

Michael Patrick Quinn was killed in the wreck of the Chesapeake and Ohio
Passenger Train #3 known as the "Fast Flying Virginian". The train was traveling
west on a rainy day toward Hinton when it collided with a mud slide. The engine
#145, along with the coal tender, express car and one passenger car was
detailed. The engine, hissing escaping steam from its damaged boiler came to
rest on its side perpendicular to the tract on which it lay across. Engineer
John W. Flannagan and fireman Michael Quinn died that afternoon as a result of
being severly scalded by escaping steam. The two dying railroaders were removed
by rail to Hinton. Michael Quinn's body was taken from Hinton to his home at
Farley in Pipestem District. Pipestem is a small rural community in southern
Summers County that in 1907 was rather isolated. George Blankenship, who in
march 1907 was 16 years old, recalled that the weather was unmercifully cold and
that there was great difficulty in transporting Michael Quinn's body by Hack to
Pipestem, which was a distance of about 10 miles up New River from Hinton. When
the party carrying Quinn's body reached warford Ferry, which was located above
Bull Falls on New River, they couldn't cross because of floating ice. Three
Martin brothers, who owned a 60 foot bateauz (raft), volunteered to take the
body across New River. They asked George to help. A man with a horse and sled
was waiting for them and he transported the body to Pipestem where Michael Quinn
is buried in the Farley Cemetery (Beech Spring).
