Hi Margaret,
Do you know the names of John's parents? That would help identify him when
looking for a death record. About when was he born? Did he and his wife
Margaret marry in Ireland? Did she ever come to the US? What was her maiden
name? Were their children all born in Ireland? Do you have any idea how
long he was in the US? Did he have a special profession or did he work in a
particular type of industry (textile, building trades, etc.), or would he
have been a laborer? Is there any indication in the parish register in
Ireland of his death? If you had an exact date (or at least a month and
year), that would help. Do you have any clues where he lived or what he was
doing when he was in the US? Was anyone else here with him at the
time? Did he bring any sons or brothers with him to work? You mentioned
his 2 sisters Margaret & Mary. Have you traced them back to see if they
were in the US then? Do you know when they arrived in the US? Any other
relatives here then?
I trace all FARRELLs in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey - about 15
miles west of New York City. Many Irish came there to get jobs, but it was
not as popular a destiniation by the 1890s as it was earlier. By then,
Newark and Jersey City were more popular. I also have traced other FARRELLs
in northern NJ, especially Jersey City and the Newark area, and in upstate
New York near Albany.
I too was looking for where my gg-gfather John FARRELL died. I think I have
finally discovered it after 10 years of searching... I found him in the
1860 census in Greenbush (today called Rensselaer), New York. It think I
have found his widow there in the 1870 census index, but I'll have to see
what the census says... By 1872, she and the children had moved to Paterson NJ.
The problem is that there were many many John FARRELLs in the US. Also, in
many places, there were no death records kept. or else they were kept at
the county level. Not too many states had statewide death registers by
then. And among those who did, some don't have indexes (NJ's statewide
death records, for example, are not indexed during that period, but earlier
and later ones are). It would be good to have some clue of where to look.
Any ideas at all?
