British History Online
Understanding your ancestors is more than just having the dates and
places of the major events in their lives. You also need to
understand the world in which they lived. Part of that is geography:
the valleys, rivers, roads and political boundaries of the places
where they lived.
There is also a cultural setting. What were the religious, economic
and political climates like in the place and time where your ancestor
lived? You can (and should) study those factors. But you can also use
a quick reference to guide you when the inevitable questions arise.
If your ancestors were British, the BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation) can help. They have placed a useful )and easily used)
summary of British history on their website, BBC Online.
The historical record can be searched for a specific events, but it
may be more enlightening to open up the timeline and zoom in on the
time period that interests you. From an opening menu of about a dozen
eras you can get an overview of the time period and links to dozens
of more precise summaries. For example, "The Tudors, 1485-1603"
includes an essay on "The Dissolution of the Monasteries, 1536-1540",
one of the defining moments in the change of Britain from a Catholic
nation to a Protestant one. As noted, the change impacted more than
just religion, but had huge impact in the arenas of politics, taxes,
and military actions.
The timelines and their articles are no substitute for a full-fledged
history, but their concise and informative information constitute an
excellent reference for those who are trying to understand a history
they didn't learn in school.
