I'm sure you are right! On Alice FEATHERSTONE's birth certificate mother's
name is given as Elizabeth Jane STEED, on Frank FEATHERSTONE it is STARTUP.
I checked the registers at the FRC and only found Elizabeth Jane STEED with
no father, only a mother - but why inflict the whole family with being STEED
STARTUPs?

Don't be surprised if you find out they married after her birth and that her
mother was a Steed who couldn't stop what Thomas Started up! (oh, dear)

Marriage certificate received today:

1865 Marriage solemnized at The Parish Church in the Parish of Tonbridge in
the County of Kent
422/March 23/ George FEATHERSTONE 36 bachelor baker of Tonbridge, father's
name Thomas, coachman and Elizabeth Jane Steed STARTUP 21 spinster of
Tonbridge father James Steed STARTUP plasterer.

Married in the Parish Church according to the rites and ceremonies of the
Established Church by licence by me W R Morgan.

George FEATHERSTONE and Elizabeth Jane Steed STARTUP signed in the presence
of Horace Steed STARTUP and Hannah Steed STARTUP.

Now I need to trace the STEED STARTUPS - what I mouthful!
Alice FEATHERSTONE was born exactly two months after this marriage on 23 May
1865.

The reference in the index to this certificate is MARCH 1865 TUNBRIDGE
2a.595
