The following quote comes from TRACING YOUR FAMILY TREE by Jean Cole and
John Titford, and may help may of us from poor families understand why
events we have spent ages looking for are actually missing or non-existent.
=================

Stamp Duty Act 1783
By this Act, a duty of 3d was imposed on all baptism, marriage and burial
entries in the parish registers, the minister receiving a 10% fee. Paupers
were exempt from this tax, and parish registers entries will be annotated
with the letter 'p' or the word 'pauper' beside the entry in such cases. By
1785 the tax was extended to nonconformists. This was a most unpopular tax
and was repealed in 1794. During its operation, parents who could not claim
exemption as paupers but who were really unable to afford the tax, would be
very reluctant to have their children baptised. Sometimes the local
incumbent would catch up with a family in which a number of unbaptised
children were lurking, and a multiple ceremony would follow. If a baptismal
entry seems to be missing at this time, it is worth looking for records of
adult baptism in the years after the Act was repealed.

An entry in the parish records for Enbourne in Berkshire (Nr Newbury) in
1783 reads: -

"On the first day of October 1783 an Act of Parliament took place for
paying three pence on the Registering every Christening, Burial or
marriage."

Could this explain why I can't find some of the entries that I'm looking
for?
