Subject: Looking for Velcsov or Welcsow from Perlasz, Torantal, Hungary
Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 06:59:23 -0800
Hi & Happy Holidays ;-)
I'm looking for any information on the name Velcsov (or
Welcsow) from the Perlasz, Hungary area. (Both variants
appear on passenger manifests.) Family lore states that only
one family group with this name emigrated, but running the
name (& variants) through Ancestry, et al, has brought up
several *unrelated* people with this name (who also are from
the Perlasz area). Is it possible that this is or was a
place name? Or perhaps a common name - sort of the
equivalent to White or Jones?
Can anyone tell me which Catholic diocese handles the
Perlasz area? I'm assuming my ancestors were Catholic, since
they are buried in a Catholic cemetery in New Jersey. I have
the names of my great-great-grandparents, and am curious to
see if I can tie into these otherwise unrelated individuals.
I do know that there appears to have been some sort of
falling-out with the family prior to their immigration in
1903 (or, perhaps because of it), so it is possible that
these people are actually related. Unlike most migrants, my
ancestors were extremely closed-mouthed about family and
friends in 'the old country,' other than to insist
(vehemently) that the family was actually Austrian.
If anyone might be so kind as to point me in the right
direction, I would be most grateful.
TIA,
Tommi Welchoff-White
