Have you attempted to locate his death certificate? If he was in the
Chicago area in 1880, he would have been nearing 70. It's possible that
he died in that same area.
Look for him again in the 1900 census. If you don't find him, then at
least you have only a twenty year range to request from Illinois Vital
Records.
You have plenty of information to request a death certificate. You have
a spouse's name and many children's names. You have a birth year. You
may be surprised to find that they have parents' names too. Especially
if the spouse in 1880 is the same spouse from Bohemia. He brought a ten
year old with him, so surely that child's mother would have known her in
laws.
I know that he wouldn't have been alive long enough to register for
social security in the early 30s'.
Where did he live in the Chicago area? Do you know anything about his
religion? Most folks in the 1880s went to church close to their homes.
Have you checked the churches in the area for funeral records? Or just
registration records, baptism records of the children, perhaps.
If you know anything about his young life, like if he was in the
military in Bohemia, you may be able to find something on the LDS site.
The church books for the military have been filmed there. It might take
some looking, but you still might find something.
Just some thoughts. I did well by writing to the churches in Colorado
and Illinois.
Good luck in your searches!
