Thanks, I did find the town on a map.  It is called Bucka in Slovenia.  But you make a good point that village or town names may be different from what we expect.

To Lori Busch:

Don't know about the village, but I have cousins with the surname Buchta.
I
think they were Czech, Bohemian.

Are you sure the country your ancestors are from is Slovenia?

My grandmother always said she was from Vienna. Wrong. Found a copy of her
birth record in some old family material, and she was actually born in a
tiny village in now Slovakia near the now Polish border. All that was
formerly Austro-Hungarian empire, so maybe she just thought nobody would
know the part of the world where her little village was, so she just said
the name of a big city that everybody would recognize.

Also on a huge map prepared by Paul Robert Magocsi about the Carpatho-Rusyn
peoples, there are several villages that have a similar sounding or
beginning sounding name:

Buk
Bukivvceve
Bukivci
Bukivc'ovo
Bukkos
Bukkosko
Bukkospaak
Bukocz
etc.

If you're interested, there might be a copy of the map in your library or
you can order one online like I did. It's about $20 and is roughly 3'
x 4'.
Full of great information, including former and current names of villages in
what is now Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary.

Not meaning to change the subject...but one of my New Year's resolutions is
to learn to make poppy seed coffee cake and kolackys like my Bohemian
grandmother made. Any authentic recipes out there, you'd care to share?
Happy New Year and happy hunting.
Thanks,
Marg

area.? It's from my cousin (by marriage)?Jan who's ancestors are from
Slovenia:

1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup oil
2 teas. salt
2 cups water
1 pkg yeast
2 cups flour

Let rise twice, fill with fruit & bake.? She didn't say at what
temperature,
but I imagine at about 350?
