Eugene,
Found your village on my map, it is northeast of Michalovce. No, it is not
the same village as my grandmother's. On the FHL's microfilm church
records, the village was known as Felso Mirosso (Upper Mirosso), aka
Felsomerse. Today it is called Vysny Mirosov and is very near the Polish
border, forming sort of the apex of a triangle with Bardejov and Svidnik on
today's Highway 77.
Byf the way, my map indicates that Vinne, in 1806, was one of the "villages
with significant Carpatho-Russyn settlement".
Since perhaps your uncle perhaps claimed to be from Vienna, it must not have
been so uncommon a thing to mention a larger city that everybody would
recognize. Or perhaps our ancestors thought it would boost their image if
they claimed to be from the "city".....as if their whole appearance and
demeanor didn't scream out "peasant"! (At least in my ancestor's case it
did!)
Wonder if others in our group have experienced the same thing?
Mica

To Mica,
Just wondering if the tiny village might have been Vinne or Vinna Banka,
now in Slovakia, formerly in Ung County, Hungary. My uncle was also thought
to have been born in Vienna, but records show that he, too, was from village
Vinne.

My grandmother always said she was from Vienna. Wrong. Found a copy of
her
birth record in some old family material, and she was actually born in a
tiny village in now Slovakia near the now Polish border. All that was
formerly Austro-Hungarian empire, so maybe she just thought nobody would
know the part of the world where her little village was, so she just
said
the name of a big city that everybody would recognize.
