My grandparents were much the same as yours, peasant farmers who also owned their animals. They were from eastern Hungary in the Carpathian foothills village of Vinna Banka (today known as Vinne, Slovakia). I'm not aware of any tunnels in that region. My aunt who was born there spoke to her children of the beauty of the nearby mountains.

I did find out that the Poles settled in the western part of Galacia so
hat may help me find tunnels there. I can't seem to find them on a
ap. The one you sent me is way up in the cold mountains.
My grandmother's family were peasants and had animals so I would think
hey would be in a lower elevation.
