How lucky you are, Julie, to have so much documentation on your Fenian. His
story sounds somewhat like John Boyle O'Reilly who was transported to
Australia as a Fenian and aided in escaping by a Roman Catholic priest there.
He was smuggled out on a trading ship and landed in the Carolina's. He
travelled from there to NYC to meet up with the NY Fenians. He ultimately
came to Boston and settled here becoming the Editor of the Irish Catholic
newspaper, The Pilot. He was an outspoken and softspoken proponant of civil
rights and a friend and champion of the 'blacks' as well as his fellow Irish
in Boston. There is a book of his poetry recently published. He was a gentle
patriot and a family man. He died prematurely at 46yo and his funeral was one
of the largest ever seen in Boston to that time. The Pilot is famous in Irish
genealogical circles for its much-read columns "Searching of Missing Friends"
which have been made into about 7 volumes in the past few years.
Your Fenian probably 'escaped' from Ireland if he was not transported. Do you
want to share his name?
There was at one time a list of transported Fenians who rose to grand
success in various fields, many in the USA. I believe the list was presented
to a very astonished Queen Victoria at one time. Does this sound familiar to
anyone here? I may be able to resurrect the list from my files if anyone is
interested.
