Penny, did you notice the older woman Martha Johnston on the cencus also from NC? and she was 63 in 1850, I think this must have been them mother of Mary and Rebecca Johnston who married into the Southerlands!!! Also please note the Southerland names...interesting when John L Ferguson and Nancy Lauretta Southerland had kids they named them John, Francis and Ovanda...obviously this was the "stronger" side for some reason.

I sent you guys a Southerland picture earlier.

I've been working this morning on this too. It would make more sense if the
E3b Johnsons could tie their genealogy together but they can't either.

Hmmmm now that is kind of interesting. My ggrandfather married into a
Harvey family in MO.

Now you know that Samuel and Isham Southerlin (Sutherlin)/Southerland
intermarried with two Johnston (Mary (b approx 1811 first husband Alfred
Moore) and her sister Rebecca) sisters out of North Carolina (Mary Johnston
who married Samuel was the mother of Nancy who married John L. Ferguson). I
do not know anything about these two ladies. But I can tell you that my
Southerlin's took in the Ferguson kids when Nancy and John Ferguson died
untimely deaths. The Southerlins were also out of either North of South
Carolina and prior to that the family was apparently from Virgina. These
three Ferguson orphans were:
Francis Wilson Ferguson, b 1875
John Alexander Ferguson (my ggrandpa) 1877
Ovanda Pearl Ferguson (who died at 8): 1880

>From Family bible re: Ovanda:
poem
a precious one from us has gone
a voice in love is stilled
a place is vacant in our house
which never can be filled
God in his wisdom has recalled
the boone his love has given
and though the body moulders here,
the soul is safe in heaven

also a little note above the poem:
there is no death what seems so transition
this life of mortal breath is but a suburb of the life elysian
whose portal we call death

My uncle twice removed said he had heard that Ovanda was playing with her
brothers, and fell and hit her head.

Colin I will send a picture of the Sutherlin's with the two orphans John A.
and Frank W.

I have so far not been able to find Fank Ferguson or his descendents
although we think he married a Lilly and had at least two girls.

ps Here is note about Samuel Southerlin:

Results are in for the upgrade to 67 markers for Gerald Hope's DNA
donor Jim Bob Ferguson. They confirm the close relationship between he
and the others of this group including William Lazzeri Johnston, Jr.
of the Johnson DNA Project.

Within the Johnson/Johnston/Johnstone project they have subclassed the
group which contains William Lazzeri as the "Group Norway Maple".
Besides William there are four other members but unfortunately they
have tested to only 12 markers. See:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hjohnson/haplogroup.e3b.html

I was able to fold in two JOHNSON Haplotypes from the SMGF database.
The trace back to Samuel Johnson b.~1817, TN and Moses Johnson b.~1778
of Wilkes Co., NC. The resulting Phylogenetic Tree is here:

Cheers,
Colin
