Further to Colin's comments, you can see the distribution of names at
www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk. This shows you how common the name is in a
particular area when compared with all other names in that area. So for 1881
the highest distributions of the name Ferguson are in Inverness County and
in the Outer Hebrides. The next highest distributions are in Perth and
Argyll. The distribution of the name in England is very low.

IMHO this suggests that the "English" Ferguson families are probably the
descendants of immigrants from Scotland where the name is widely
distributed.
