Friends of the Archives Building:

There is some good news and some bad news about the Polly
Rosenbaum State Archives Building.

First, the good news. Governor Hull has signed HB2632 into law.
The Capital Outlay Bill authorizes the State of Arizona to issue
$20 million in Certificates of Participation (COP's) to construct
a dedicated state archives building that will be named after
long-time legislator Polly Rosenbaum.

Now the bad news. Governor Hull has line-item vetoed funding for
the first fiscal year of payments (FY2002, starting July 1, 2001).
However, we have been assured that the Governor supports
construction of the archives building. There is a possibility
that the COP's could be issued in FY2002 in preparation for a
first payment on July 1, 2002 (first day of FY2003). This means
that there may be only a slight delay in the start of construction
of the archives building (perhaps less than a full year).

There are a couple of things we need to do in the meantime. The
first is to give a big THANK YOU to all the people who worked on
this project to get us to this point. If you had contact with
legislators, staff members, media, colleagues, etc., to discuss
the building, please take some time to drop them a note, send them
an e-mail, or give a call to say thank you.

Second, there will be a need for people to serve on a planning
committee for the new building. A lot of work remains before the
first spade of earth is turned, so volunteers must come forth to
make the vision of the building a reality. If you are interested
in serving, please contact FAzA.

Take some time to pat yourself on the back for a job well done,
but remain cautious. We were down this road once before, in 1987,
when plans for the archives building fell victim to that year's
fiscal crisis.
