According to my family stories, the land in Highlands county was pretty close
to that of South Georgia in farming and climate. The land was cheap and
Georgia was in an uproar with landowners not happy about the end of slavery
and all. My family fled Georgia to get away from it all. Anybody seen
stories from old newspapers about the old residents, the ones that moved to
the area after the civil war? I had copies of some a while back. Some
stories written about the Prescotts and about how Billy Bowlegs used to stop
and sip lemonade with Samuel Prescott, my ggrandfather. Very interesting,
even if it wasn't true. :)
