Sue Ann and list,

In the front of most Dity Directories there is an index of the
abbreviations used in the directory,
this includes street and suburb abbreviations.

h - householder
r - resides or rooms

it also states "This is the only record in existence that aims to show
the name, marital status, occupation, and address of each adult
resident of Jacksonville, ..."
I would say that the single woman listed would indeed be widowed,
single, or divorced.
