I also remember the bad storms in those days and spending the night at the
Masonic Temple in Jax because it was too dangerous to stay at home. Oct.
19, 1946, my brother's birthday. He got a puppy and we took it to the temple
too. We lived in an upstairs apt. then. My grandmother was afraid the
stairs would wash away so we went downstairs to stay with the landlord. She
got 5 inches of water in the house and we were scared. The fire dept. came
to get us out. We didn't know the water was waist deep in the yard. The
street was higher but still had water on it. That year the storm weaved in
and out of the bulkhead, taking everything behind it. Another year I watched
the sandbaggers work all night trying to save 2 and 3 story homes near 10th.
At nightfall these homes were resting only on their pilings they were built
