Subject: [FLLIBERT] safety issue
Date: Thu, 9 Oct 2003 13:32:27 EDT
Hi Ya'll,
This is not the world we grew up in. The internet is an "invention" of the
newer generation. We cannot use ignorance as an excuse for our naiveté. The
following blurb was sent to me regarding safety issues about websites that
including phone listings with directions. While this is not new, it is a definite
threat to your safety and anonymity. I do believe that many people are not aware
of the problems that exist. Many people go online with hunting, researching
and fishing expeditions and never make a connection regarding safety. We stick
our phone numbers and addresses on our emails when we post to the surname
lists, or other lists that are open domain. Rootsweb archives are available to ALL
people who choose to look through them. If you think you are sharing your
phone and address with only "family members" you are wrong.
Please read the following, implement the safety features and let's ALL be
careful out there!
Sincerely,
Dianne Johnson

Telephone Listing Alert
Google.com has a feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into
the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house.
Think about it.. if a child, officer, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her
phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she
lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.
Mapquest will actually put a star on your house on your street.
In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: www.google.com
and type your phone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e.123-555-1212) and
hit enter.
NOTE: If your phone number is not publicly listed, you should be fine. If you
want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on
the telephone icon to the left of your phone number. You will see a link near
the bottom where you are allowed to REMOVE yourself.
Consider forwarding this information to other friends and family members.
Both of you might be glad that you took the time to let them know the potential
dangers.
