Wilbur R. Powell
Wilbur R. Powell, 72, 375 Makron Drive, Fort
Walton Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2986 at a
local hospital.
Mr. Powell was founder and president of Vaca-
tionland Broadcasting Company, and owner of
WFTW radio stations.
A fifth generation native of Okaloosa County,
Mr. Powell worked for and eventually bought the
Okaloosa News Journal. In 1953, he applied for and
received the license for south Okaloosa County's
first radio station.
He was instrumental in the formation of the
Kiwanis Club, the municipal golf course, the Fort
Walton Beach Yacht Club, where he was a com-
modore, and the Greater Fort Walton Beach
Chamber of Commerce, where he served as
president.
Mr. Powell also supported many charities, local
clubs, and civic organizations, both personally and
through the radio stations.
Surviving are his sons, Rodney R. Powell Sr. of Fort
Walton Beach, Fla. and Kris Powell of Destin,
Fla.; two brothers, Gillis E. Powell Sr. of Fort
Walton Beach/Crestview, Fla., H. Ferris Powell of
Freeport, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday,
October 7, 1986 at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel, 17
Chestnut Ave. S.E., Fort Walton Beach, Fla., with
Dr. James Monroe officiating.
Burial will follow in Beal Memorial Cemetery in
Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
McLaughlin Mortuary is in charge of the
arrangements.
