The 1830 census for Sevier County, Tennessee shows 2 Nathaniel Floyds, one
old and one young. It also lists a Richard Birdgette (Bird) Floyd born in
SC in 1804 and his wife Elizabeth, born in TN. They had 8 children-Thomas H.
born 1838, Isaac born 1835, Richard born 1839, Eli born 1842, Henry born
1844, Jemima born 1845, Jane born 1847, and Robert born 1831.

Thomas H Floyd served as a Pvt. in the Union Army during the Civil War. He
got a pension which enabled him to buy land. He married Elizabeth McFalls
and they settled in the Walden's Creek Community of Sevier County. Their
children were James Richard, Arthur, Margaret Melinda, Isabella (Fanny) and
Rebecca. Before the family was grown Elizabeth died and Thomas moved his
family to the Roaring Fork Community above Gatlinburg, TN. In addition to
farming, Thomas was a Primitive Baptist preacher.

James Richard married Rebecca Jane Ogle of the famous Sevier County Ogle
family. They had 10 children one of which was my father, Lawson Eli Floyd
who was born in 1904. Their other children were Anna Melinda--1897, Mary
Rosetta--1895, Ollie Arlena--1902, James Thomas--1899, Elbridge
Madison--1910, Ernest Lee--1908, Lillie Mae--1891, Minnie Isabel--1906, and
Rebecca Lizzie--1893.

In the 1920's the Smoky Mountain National Park bought out all the farms on
the Roaring Fork for inclusion in the park and my grandfather moved what was
left of his family at home to the Glades section of Sevier County.

My father, Lawson Eli Floyd married Jane Ogle of Sevier County and they had 2
daughters, Reba and Eula Gale. He subsequently was divorced from Jane Ogle
and married my Mother, Minerva Able of Townsend area of Blount County, TN. I
was their only child. My father died in 1992.

I married Don Carrigan of Alcoa, TN and we have 3 grown children. We live at
the foot of the Smoky Mountains in Walland, TN.

I have only named my direct line; all of the Floyds in my branch down through
the years had families and many of the names of Richard Bird's children show
up all through the family. If anyone is interested in any of the others,
please let me know and I will share all the information I have. Some of them
have left Tennessee but many of them still remain here.

By the way, the two Nathaniel Floyds were both missing by the 1840 census and
I don't know what happened to them.

Doris Floyd Carrigan
