1. GEORGE WASHINGTON3 FORD (RALPH2, RICHARD1) was born January 10, 1789 in

A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF REV. GEORGE FORD AND FAMILY
Rev. George Ford came to this county in an early day and purchased a large
boundary of land about 1 1/1miles west of Wesley Hollensworth and others, and
settled on said farm. He always had an abundance of cherries, peaches, and
apples for sale as far back as I can recollect. He would supply the citizens of
Tazewell with fine fruits. Oh, how I delighted to see Mr. Ford and wife coming
in with large sacks loaded with fine fruits. They invariable would stay at
Father's until they would sell out their fruit.
Rev. George Ford was a minister of the gospel of the M.E. Church. He preached
in Tazewell very often. He was one of those plain, old-fashioned preachers. Old
and young alike loved to hear him expound the Word of God. In the year 1814,
the young people of Tazewell bought him a suit of broadcloth, boots, hat and
necktie, which cost $50, and dressed him in style. This I have mentioned
heretofore in my sketches. He was a good citizen and left a good name behind
him. He gave the site on which For's Chapel is built, and also gave land on
which to build the camp ground, which is called Ford's Campground in honor of
his name. He was a very strong Republican. He was in Tazewell when the Rebel
soldiers raided in under the command of Col. Ashby, and cut the Union flag pole
down, and tore the flag in ribbons, and went galloping down street, each one of
them with a string of it in their mouths, flying in the air. I was told that
Mr. Ford made a walking cane of a portion of the flag pole and preserved it as
a remembrance as long as he lived. He raised a large family but as they lived
some distance from town I had but a slight acquaintance with the family. I can
only call to mind four of the family: Greenberry, Wiley, Isaac and Rev. Elijah
Ford. I cannot give a minute description of their families, but suffice it to
say, as far as I have any knowledge, all the children and grandchildren of Rev.
George Ford have made good citizens and stand fair in society. Several of his
descendants own farms and live in the neighborhood where they were raised. Some
of them own the old homestead of their Grandparents. The old folks lived to be
very old. They have passed away many years ago and go to their reward.
