Hi Richard:
Many thanks for your response. I do appreciate your time. My Forts
are from Lancs., so Sir Richard Fort of Read Hall, County Lancashire,
are most likely my group. I wonder though, mine were very poor, so it
is hard to imagine having a "Sir Richard" in the family. As I said
before, the furthest back I have is a Nick - I did find a Nick Fort
listed as a pauper in the 1851 census. When I received the
information pertinent to this man (I had assumed he was a youngish
child, orphan) it turned out he was an 81 year old man, boarding with
a family with the surname Pash in Devon. He was born in Bigbury - I
need to find out where that is.
1851 Dev 10 County-Enumeration District Devon -A Exeter St Mary

Henry Pash Son Unmarried 15 Scholar Dev B Salterton
Thomas Pash Son 3 Dev Exeter
Mary Ann Pash Daughter .750 Dev Exeter
Nicholas Fort Lodger Widr 81 Pauper Sawyer Dev Bigbury
I also found a big group of Fort's in Padiham, Lancs., England, but
none called Nicholas or Nick.
Thanks again for your information,
Regards,
