Steve, my wife is a direct descendant of Ralph FOSTER who arrived in
Leamington about 1826. Ralph was born Dec. 27, 1795, in the parish of
Wardell, Durham County, the son of John Fo(r)ster. He married Ann
Wilthew April 25, 1817 in Hexham, Northumberland and they came to Nova
Scotia, Canada shortly thereafter. (Source "Commemorative Biographical
Record of the County Of Essex Ontario", 1905). Ralph Foster received a
land grant in 1835 to 200 acres about 1 mile east of the present town
of Leamington.
The Essex book is in error about his place of birth, but tells the
story of his family. We are working on his English ancestry, and
will be going to Salt Lake next month to try to solve many puzzles.
His eldest children, Ann, John and Thomas were born before his
arrival in Mersea township, Essex County, Ontario. There is no
connection to the UEL, although Ralph was an officer in the militia
during the rebellion of 1837/38. There are over 100 FOSTER
descendants buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington and are
listed in a book by the Essex Branch of the OGS.
We would be glad to exchange information with other FOSTER
descendants., and Steve, e-mail me what info you have about John
and I will send you what we have.
