The death certificate of John James VARICK who was born
1821 IN New York City and died 1882 states his father was
Richard VARICK (this Richard is NOT the mayor of New York City)
and Margaret FOSTER.
I spent days going through the New York City directories for listing
of VARICK and FOSTER that were in the same vicinity (which is the
extreme southern part of NYC) hoping to find a connection.
In the directory of 1834/35 she is listed as Marjory, widow of Richard,
151 Prince Street; 1835/36 she is listed as Margarey, widow of Richard
(same address). The last listing for Richard was 1821/22 , Mariner,
at Grand N. Chrystie. So he either died or skipped town between
those dates.
Starting with directory of 1842/43 she is listed as Margaret, widow of
Richard and appears at several different addresses but all within that
same area.
In 1838 she indentured her son John James to William Hesketh,
Blacksmith.
1850 Census of NYC, 9th Ward, shows this VARICK family:
Margaret 66, Phineas 37, Elizabeth 35, Joseph 38 and in the
household is Samuel BENNETT 38.
Same census shows John James VARICK in the 8th ward.
Sure would like to find Margaret's parents.
