I suggest that you consult the "Alsatian Emigration Index (1818-1865)" which
covers both Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin. The second half of the index (L-P) is in
microfilm 1,125,005 from the FHL so I guess the A's would be found in
microfilm
1,125,004 but you can check when you order it. If you are really lucky, you
may find your ancestor. If you are not quite so lucky, you will at least find
out the localities from which others with this name have emigrated. Either
way
you can then go to the "Etat civil" registers (microfilmed and available in
FHL) for those localities and search for your family. It worked for me 20
years ago!!
You should keep an open mind re: port of emigration. My folks left in
1848 from LeHavre and other relatives also left from LeHavre in 1857.
