In checking Ancestry.com I find that Gabriel Hourtal was married in
Manhattan, New York in 1884. The following is the information as shown.

He was living in 1910 in Jersey City, New Jersey with his wife Anna, born in
England, and children. This census is very faint, and difficult to read. The
eldest son living at home may be the Celestin to whom you referred. There is
a daughter whose name I cannot read, and a son Gabriel born 1898. The
following refers to the death of this son, also from Ancestry.

This is Celestin in 1910 on the census as listed by Ancestry. He has a son
named Celestin Jr, a son named Franklin, and a daughter named Madelene.

There is a listing on the 1920 census of Gabriel Jr. being listed on a
military ship in California as a fireman, but he returned to the east coast
afterwards and died in Rhode Island. The following information comes from his
draft registration card where he signed his name as Clestin Henry Hourtal. At the
time of his registration he is working at the Fischer Body Co. in Detroit.
For years Chevrolet advertised their cars as, "body by Fischer." Detroit is
the home of the American automobile industry.

I cannot find Gabriel, the father, on the census after 1910. It is possible
he was living with another child. His wife was apparently named Anna.
Gabrel's record of entry to the United States is as follows from Ancestry.

I hope this helps. Thank you for the information on the Combes surname. I
will have to look into the origins of Richard. I have another ancestor,
Claudius Pegues whose father left Rodez, France, married in Switzerland and
settled in London where Claudius was born. The son came to the colonies in the
1700s and had two sons who fought in the Revolutionary War. This family also had
left France due to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Perhaps I have
more than one French ancestor. I should have taken French in school instead of
Spanish.

I posted this on the Fra Midi-Pryenees rootsweb list first and then realized your reply from from this forum. So you may get this once, or you may get it 2 times.
