Bob:
I strongly disagree.
One of the reasons for computerising the indexes is that there are lots of
searches possible with the computerised database that aren't possible with
the handwritten indexes, and the total database coverage graphs are central
to many of them.
For example, I am looking for someone named Edyth. Her name is
consistently spelled this way throughout her life. I know her date and
place of birth and married name, but not her maiden name. As soon as the
quarter covering her birth is up to 100% I'll do a search just on the
forename to see if there's just one person who fits, as I hope. The graphs
are essential for this.
And apart from anything else, the database coverage graphs must be good for
transcriber morale.
