I'm not an expert! But...
I think the problem is that web designers have no control over the width of
the page - that is dependant upon the font size and screen resolution of
each individual user.
Therefore, as the pages load from the left, if you are using a low screen
res and/or high font size, you lose the right-hand side of the page. Which
is a pain if it is the navigation bar/index!

But otherwise, you are right, it would be easier.....
