Subject: Welcome to this List
What do you need to know about someone for them to fit into your
syndicate?
The following is what I send out to people who express an interest in
volunteering to transcribe:
Thanks for the message.
What we propose is that people have (or access to) a fiche reader, send a
cheque for a refundable deposit of $NZ15 plus $NZ5 for the 'hire' of the
fiche. The $5 will be used to repay the purchase costs and meet the admin
costs such as postage, stationary and record keeping etc. The deposit would
only be forfeited if the fiche is not returned (each fiche has to be
transcribed twice by different people for accuracy checks)or returned
damaged and unusable. When the fiche is transcribed it is returned for a
refund or with a cheque for $5.00 to get another to do and so on. At the
end of the project all the fiche will be donated to the NZ Society of
Genealogists and remaining funds distributed back to the transcribers.
I trust you will find this acceptable.
If so, please send a cheque, payable to the FreeBMD NZ Project, to me at:
[My address]
and include your address for me to send a fiche to.
You will also need to go to the FreeBMD website
{ http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/bmd-add-user.pl } to register yourself.
Would you please send me your ID so I can collate the statistics.
Look forward to hearing from you
I also point them to my website which has details of our NZ Project and the
current statistics (updated monthly at present) and links to the FreeBMD
site.
I use a library management program called All Media Library, which allows me
to enter volunteers details and 'issue/return' fiche to them.
Once they accept the above, a fiche is sent together with a SAE for its
return, and if they have access to MSWord, a zipped file containing a
template and macros (designed by Peter Cox & called SpeedBMD) together with
instructions, file format required and a district table is forwarded. If any
one would like to try this please mail me direct.
I also suggest that the first couple of transcriptions done for upload are
only 1 page of a fiche until they get the 'hang of it' and I suggest that
they e-mail the file to me if they are having problems getting it accepted.
Cheers
Chris Lloyd
