Control and F7 within SpeedBMD will also give you a list of symbols to chose a special
character from, including the ü

To get the ü character, you needto have Num Lock ON. Hold down the Alt key
and type 129 on the numbers keypad, then release the Alt key. I have not
tried this in Free BMD yet, have a go and see.
