Hello Derek

I am not a coordinator but like to keep in touch by reading this list and it
occurs to me that you could be incurring unneccesary costs by scanning
years already covered from non scan sources. I transcribe for John Pain's
syndicate and we do not work from scans at all. I am currently transcribing
1874 marriages from microfiche.

Your source may be well worth use when we get on to 2nd transcriptions? But
surely the priority is to get a 1st transcription completed and you should
consider obtaining films which are not already covered.

Regards
Mervyn Wright

Hi Allan and other coordinators.

As to the current and future quality and availibility of scans.

Scan2 syndicate for it's own use and to be made available to other
coordinators has now completed the purchase of new 35mm microfilms for all
events and all quarters of 1889 through 1903 also 1904 through 1906 births
only. These are all being scanned over the next few months and will be
added to GUS as the scans become available. I have a sponsor that is doing
this for FREE but has to be fitted in with their own ( PAID ) work They
are managing to do one or two films per week at this time (they have 37
rolls waiting to be scanned at this time)..

Scan2 has completed 26,029 scans and has 2,762 allocated and not
done. There are 7,905 scans available to allocate. The current scanning
activity will add another 49,245 scans to this.

Scan2 plans to work on Purchasing more films to make 1879 through
1888 all quarters all events and make those scans available through the GUS
database during early 2003 and then 1869 through 1878 during late 2003 with
1865 through 1868 after that. These are all the typeset scans (380 per
page) The timing for the purchase of 1865 through 1888 is dependant on
raising funds for this.

Each year averages 6 films at 15.00 pounds sterling each Or
100.00 pounds sterling per year ($150.00 US or $230.00 CDN) If any one
out there cares to donate cash by cheque in any of the three currencies
mentioned to me. An order will be place by year immediately every time the
cash pile reaches a 100.00 pound sterling equivalent total .

This will make sure that we have a good supply of good quality
scans from 1865 through to 1903.. 1864 and Earlier years take up more
rolls of film per year and are consequently much more expensive to
procure. Ancestry already have a set of films (used) that were got for
this project, which they are scanning. They are working from 1837 through
to 1864 (what ever the quality).
