I and a few of my syndicate have used Excel ever since we started work
in 1999 and have never seen a problem like this. I do all my FreeBMD
work in my lunchtimes and we are not allowed to load any programmes on
to our computers so I have no choice.
The main problem that we have encountered with Excel is that you can't
add a "+" sign in easily, you have to type a single quote before it to
force it to view the line as type TEXT rather than thinking that it is a
formula.
I dump all the data into a CSV file, open that in Word, add the standard
header, modifying the variable components as necessary, then save it as
a .TXT file and upload that. While it may take a minute or two extra, I
only upload large files (98 pages = 1 complete fiche) at a time so it
isn't much of an overhead and it gives me an opportunity to run some
error checking if I want to before sending the data.
The suggestion on CASE sounds like a good bet - some of my transcribers
type "+Page" occasionally which I have to correct.

Hi
Is there anyone who is familiar with doing the transcribing using
spreedsheets, such as Excel that could assist me with this.
I have a new transcriber whom using WinBMD (or SpeedBMD) isn't an option
for them, and so has to use a spreadsheet. However, we are having
problems with one part of the file.
Whenever I open one of the files they send my (sent as a CSV file),
WinBMD says that the Event Type is invalid and makes an assumption
(which it has got wrong so far).
A comparison programme I have used when comparing the headers of their
csv file to one I created in WinBMD for the same page show both to be
identical.
Any suggestions as to what the problem is, and how to fix it.
Thanks
Note: Rest of headers, and page in general is showing up correctly when
I open it in WinBMD
<SNIP>
Is the event type in all UPPER CASE?
Because if it isn't it won't be recognised.
