I suspect that in the last week or so an update of something (either Windows
or maybe some 'security' software) may have made WinBMD on Vista more
unpredictable, and I had one of these mystery error messages appear a few
days ago after running WinBMD on Vista successfully for months. One of my
transcribers has similarly run into problems last week after having none for
months. That is with 'run time error 429 Active X component can't create
object'.
Suggestions, for what they are worth:
1) Install as administrator and with User Account Control On
2) Tell people not to try to use WinBMD after installing it until after
restarting their computer.
3) If you do get a problem, start WinBMD using 'Run as Administrator' after
right-mouse-click on the WinBMD icon, then confirm it is a safe program that
you trust.
4) Then try to run it as normal.
It does happen that new transcribers get put off because of problems
installing WinBMD. Often these are transcribers whose computer knowledge is
insufficient to explain the problem clearly or to follow advice to put it
right.
Thinking outside the box, is it (a) feasible and (b) desirable to have a
list of experienced FreeBMD volunteers in various parts of the world who
might be able to advise people by phone in their area? Only once have I
offered my phone number to a new transcriber having difficulties getting
started, and that was some years ago, but he has clocked up well over
100,000 entries since.
Another idea 'outside the box'. Get people to try installing some other free
download software such as Irfanview or XnView or EditPad Lite and see if
that gives them any problems. They may have a generic problem with their
computer installing anything.
