Dear Elsie,
It's a small world as I was born in Winnipeg and went to Daniel
McIntyre High School in the 1960s. My father was John Freeman and was
one of 4 boys who came from London around 1910. One farmed at Lake
Francis and the other three lived and died in Winnipeg. Like you, I had
no way of finding my grandfather Freeman, but was able to make the
connection through his marriage certificate. He was born in Holborn,
London, England in 1857. I'm now trying to get back further using parish
records.
This is probably of no help to you. Have you tried to get at his
adoption papers? These may be available to you at the provincial
archives or the national archives which is on line. Have you checked out
Cindi's List which has a section on adoptions? It also has a
considerable section on Canada and its provinces. With a name like Paddy
it sounds like he could have come from Northern Ireland. There was a
rumour my grandfather came from there, but it was just a rumour.
I found that the search took me a year and it took a lot of
persistence. Good Luck.
